COLUMBIA

On January 31, 2023 our cruise took us to Cartagena, Columbia. We visited the church of the patron saint of slaves, Saint Peter Claver. We also visited a small museum about the inquisition in Columbia.

The skyline of Cartagena as we approached to dock.

We first visited the San Felipe Barajas Castle. It was finished in 1536 to protect the city. It was built by slaves.

The castle has placements for 68 cannons. It is actually a fort.

From there we went to the city center. We started our walk at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Next we stopped for shopping.

There were many bargains.

Outside there were street vendors. This was candy lane.

We entered the church of Saint Peter Clavor.

The original altar in the church.

The center of the church's altar with the body of Saint Peter Clavor. He is the patron saint of slaves.

Portrait of Saint Peter Clavor. He is credited with baptizing 300,000 people.

We pass through a park.

A tree trunk with definite problems.

We then come to a very active shopping area.

There are vendors everywhere.

On the way to the Museum of the Inquisition we pass some dancers. See video of the dancers.

The museum is extremely anti-Catholic. They present it as a choice between practicing Catholic or lose your head.

We leave into another street of vendors.

Many carry their wares on their head.

The old city is protected by 11 kilometers of walls.

We have police protection just for the tourists.
