CHEESMAN CANYON

Cheesman Canyon and Reservoir is in the Lost Creek Wilderness. The canyon hike starts 4 miles downriver from the dam. The trail is along the South Platte River usually at least 100' above the river on the north side of the canyon. The hike was on October 25, 2023.

CHEESMAN CANYON 2008

Near the trailhead you first come to a huge boulder.

There are large boulders that have fallen from the cliff side the entire hike.

There are always fisherman. They have to release the fish and cannot keep them.

The canyon sides at times go a few hundred feet above the river.

Trees grow in the craziest places. Note the tree growing from the boulder.

At the half way point the scenery continues so spectacular.

At the side of a huge boulder 100 feet above the river.

We pass two huge boulders over 100 feet high.

Near the huge boulders.

A perfect day for hiking the canyon in late October.

The sun ruins a beautiful photo.

We come to the dam. Note the water being released near the bottom of the dam.

From the highest point overlooking the dam. Note the burnt land from the Hayman fire if 2003.

Overlooking the reservoir and Hayman Fire.

We find a bench for a badly needed rest to end the hike.
